Digital Anchor XML - Digital Anchor SQL

Digital Anchor XML is a commercial-quality standards-based XML parser that makes it easy to give your application the ability to read and write XML data. A shared library is provided for parsing, generating, manipulating, and validating XML documents. Digital Anchor XML offers enhanced connectivity through an SQL based command interface to read, write, modify, and delete information stored in XML.

How does Digital Anchor XML relate to Digital Anchor SQL?

XML, like HTML, is a markup language, which means it is not a full-function language. It is not even a data sublanguage such as Digital Anchor SQL. However, it is cognizent of the content of the data it transports. XML gives structure to the document's content although does not deal with formatting itself. To do that, you have to augment XML with a style sheet.

Digital Anchor SQL and XML provide two different ways of structuring data so that you can save it and retrieve selected information from it:

  • SQL is an excellent tool for dealing with mixed format data that can be categorized by data type and have a well-defined size. It was created as a standard way to maintain and operate on data kept in relational databases.
  • XML is better at dealing with free-form data that cannot be easily categorized. Digital Anchor XML is available to provide a universal standard for transferring data between dissimilar computers and for displaying it on the Internet.

The strengths and goals of Digital Anchor SQL and Digital Anchor XML are complementary. Both work together to give users the information they need and want.

Whether or not you should store data in Digital Anchor XML format depends on what you personally plan to do with that data. There are instances in which it makes sense to store data in XML format. Perhaps the best use of XML is when dealing with foreign sources. The XML format, being an industry standard, can be imported and understood by the majority of systems today. Its format is acceptable across multiple platforms, applications, and databases and thus makes it the most functional and versatile method to communicate data between two foreign sources.

On the other hand, there are times when Digital Anchor XML does not work to your advantage. When the system is internally working with the data, it is easier, faster, and more efficient to manipulate and search data when it is stored in a record format. The XML structure makes your data very large and thus increases processing time.

As a result the Digital Anchor engine keeps data in its own proprietary record-based format while maintaining the ability to import and export your data using the XML standard, thus providing the user with the best possible speed, efficiency, and flexibility for their data
